Top Dive Trips to Discover Shipwrecks

Author: Maduro Dive Staff

Scuba diving offers opportunities to study marine ecosystems, structural degradation, or artifacts found underwater. Whether used for training or ecological observation, shipwrecks provide structured habitats that support marine biodiversity. At Maduro Dive, we partner with certified dive resorts and operators. They help divers access notable shipwreck sites across multiple locations. Here are the top places for dive trips to discover shipwrecks:

Bonaire: The Hilma Hooker

Bonaire boasts strong conservation initiatives and easy access to shore diving. It also offers wreck dives, such as the Hilma Hooker. The wreck is located between two reef systems, and its depth is suitable for intermediate to advanced diver training. Divers may observe how coral, sponges, and invertebrates have grown on the steel structure over time. Large tarpon and other pelagic species also frequent the site. Maduro Dive offers packages that include unlimited shore diving. This allows for repeat dive trips for documentation or focused skill-building exercises at this location.

Micronesia : Chuuk (Truk Lagoon) State

Chuuk has the finest collection of wreck dives to be found anywhere. US Naval air attacks during WWII of Japan’s Imperial 4th Fleet provided the shipwrecks. These ghostly wrecks are surprisingly intact and known by name, including the Shinkoku Maru, Fumitsuki, Fujikawa Maru, Nippo Maru, I-169-Betty Bomber, Jill Torpedo Bomber, Yamagiri Maru, Rio de Janeiro Maru, Amagisan Maru, and Sankisan Maru.

Divers can explore these ships and the sealife that resides there.

Honduras: The Halliburton

The Bay Islands of Honduras offer dive certification programs due to their calm sea conditions. There are multiple shipwrecks to observe, including the Halliburton. This ship was a supply vessel deliberately sunk to provide an artificial reef and serve as a diver training site. It lies at a great depth, offering dive masters the opportunity to teach advanced diving procedures. There are over 40 dive sites that allow divers to view soft corals, schooling fish, and other macroinvertebrates. At Maduro Dive, we work with several resorts to provide packages that include scheduled boat dives to this and surrounding reef sites.

Egypt: Thistlegorm Wreck, Northern Red Sea

Sunk in 1941 by a bomb from a German plane, it lies at a depth of 106 feet. A liveaboard dive trip to this wreck will provide divers with a cargo of military vehicles, motorbikes, airplane spare parts, weapons, and ammunition. But its legacy is even more impressive, because it was found and explored by Jacques Cousteau in the 1950s, and 35 years after its location was lost, it was rediscovered in 1991.
