Hawaii

The State of Hawaii is a scuba diving destination 2,000 miles SW from the mainland of the United States. The Hawaii archipelago consist of 137 islands and is 1,500 miles long. However, there are only 8 main islands. The largest population of Hawaiians are on the island of Oahu. Ironically, the second largest group of Hawaiians live in or near Las Vegas, Nevada. The islands were first populated by waves of Polynesians from 124AD to 1120AD. The Hawaiian language is similar to spoken Marquesan and Tahitian Polynesian. Captain Cook was the first European to land on the islands in 1778 and called them the Sandwich Islands. However, there is evidence that the Spanish passed by the islands in 1542 on their way from Mexico to the Philippines.  They wrote down their own island names, but kept their route secret. Nevertheless, after making contact with the Europeans, half the Hawaiian population died from influenza, small pox, and measles. Immigrants from the Gwondong region of China, the Philippines, Korea, Japanese, Germans, and Portuguese were brought in to work the sugar and later pineapple plantations. In 1893 Queen Lili’uokalani was overthrown by a group of US citizens with the assistance of US military troops. In 1959 Hawaii entered statehood. So, 1993 Hawaii received an official apology for the abrupt takeover signed by Bill Clinton.

Diving Kauai, Molokai, & Maui

Scuba diving around the islands is all about the former volcanic activity. You can dive caves, lava tubes, and tunnels; also, canyons, fingers, and craters. The beaches of Hawaii are black sand or white sand depending on the island. The islands have had time to acquired their own species of fish, birds, and plants. On Kauai, the garden island, there are over a dozen dive sites. However, currents and undertows can make many beach dive entrances difficult. You can also take a boat over to Molakai and dive Fish Rain or go over to Lanai and dive the Cathedrals and tunnels. Keep in mind it is like a bathtub between the islands and you have a good chance of hearing humpback whales while diving.

Diving Oahu & Hawaii Island

Oahu has another 15 scuba diving sites. However, the local fish population has been more impacted by multiple factors. However, the minesweeper Mahi sunk in 1983, is a major attraction. Barbados

Barbados is a scuba diving destination in the West Indies in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is approximately 21mi long by 14mi wide. The first islanders settled here around 1600BC. The Arawak moved in around 800-1200AD and then they were replaced by the Kalinaga around 13th century. The Spanish stopped by in 1511 and the English colony came to be in 1627. Barbados sits right on the edge of tectonic plates. Each year one plate passes under the island and the island increases 1 inch in height every 1,000 years. Above all, literally, there are areas where the coral is 300 feet thick. One thing to note, that where there is an abundance of lime stone, there is also an abundance of caves created by rainwater’s slow yet determined solvent properties.

Diving Barbados

The most popular wreck out here is the 365ft long SS Stavronikita. The 165ft long Pamir is also quite popular due to its shallower depth. In the Carlisle Bay Marine Park there are 5 wrecks. Maycocks Bay has a long reef and white sands. You may see up to four types of turtle out here including green, loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback. Hawksbill come ashore to lay eggs June thru November. Some of the other scuba diving sites include: Shark’s Bank, Dottins, Little Sandy Lane, Barracuda Junction, the deep, and G-SpotClarke’s Bank is known for its blue stripped grunts, yellow tail snapper, and an occasional black jack or white sided Atlantis Submarine filled with big eyed tourists. You may also see pods of dolphins, parrotfish and/or Pilot whales.

Thailand

Diving Thailand

It would take more than a couple of scuba diving trips to see all the dive sites in the Andaman sea. One the north end divers are out at Burma Banks, and the Mergui Archipelago. Keep your eye out for smaller temples especially near the river or waterways in Bangkok. For water activities, there is snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands are east of Papua New Guinea, West of Fiji, and southwest of Hawaii. There are 992 islands out here and more than half are unoccupied. Melanesians first appeared on the islands over 30,000 years ago. So, scuba diving is a more a recent event. More importantly, around the islands are cuts, tunnels, caves, and the longest lagoon in the world.  Coral reefs and sandy flats make the perfect backdrops to take images of frog fish, ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses and small crustaceans. For many scuba diving activists this would be enough to fill a bucket list. However, the Solomon Islands became the host site for the battle of Guadalcanal in World War II. Diving the Solomon Islands

Morovo Lagoon is so large that it has inner islands of which some are man-made. Twin Tunnels are macro creature filled lava tubes where you can go down one and up the other. There are inland pools that cut through the jungle and break out into open water. Large pelagics are viewed around Mary Island and mantas like to roam Devils Highway. Around the Solomon Islands you’ll see soft corals, hard corals, cuttlefish, octopus, squat lobsters, crabs and more. Schooling fish include bigeye jacks, trevally, and bumphead wrasse. As for the war, the Imperial Japanese navy left transport ships, a submarine, supply ships, and even a flying boat. The Americans left bombers and a wildcat. When the Americans finally left the Solomon Islands they scuttled most military supplies at White Beach.

There is also the Wreck of the Ann and a couple of fishing boat wrecks to view. Arnavan Islands have a turtle reserve, so plan on seeing lots of hawksbill turtles.

Liveaboards allow you to view the most dive sites at one time. There are some land-based resorts in the Solomon Islands, but you will have to fly between the islands to visit certain dive sites. Bring anti-malaria pills especially for times when you are near land. The Vilu War Museum and the American War museum are a must see. You can walk through a rain forest, encounter water falls, or swim in a river. If you have time, you can visit archaeological caves and see skulls collected by former head hunters. Finally, you can go to a local village market or purchase items right from their small craft to your big boat.

Papua New Guinea

Diving Oman

Musandam on the northern tip is known for scuba diving around The Caves and Lima Rock. Around the Caves expect to see some of the 5 types of turtles found in these waters, cuttlefish, sharks, rays, goldfishes, lobster, shrimp and more. Lima Rock is a drift dive area perfect for advanced divers and has lots of small creatures and even occasional whale shark sightings.

Daymaniyat Islands are scuba diving islands in the Gulf of Oman. Aquarium in the Eastern Daymaniyat Islands is the most famous dive site with tons of small fish and occasional sightings of pelagics such as mantas and humpback whales. Coral Garden and Police Bay are in the western island group and Black Tip Reef and Garden of Eden are located in the central island group. Merbat Island also has kelp beds until October and the dive sites can be reached by boat or by 4 wheel drive jeeps.
